Meet Our Patients: Courtney Eves

Courtney has a very unusual condition in her heart and to the best of our knowledge she is the only person surviving with this condition. This condition is called Horseshoe Lung Syndrome, with Dextocardia and Scimitar Syndrome.

Courtney was born with her heart to the right side. Her right lung was being supplied with blood through a big artery coming from the descending Aorta (the large artery coming from the heart). The blood in the Aorta is pumped at very high pressure from the heart in order to carry it to the extremeties of the body, therefore the right lung was being exposed to this high pressure. In addition, the blood coming from the lungs instead of returning normally to the left side of the heart returned to the right side.

If you look at the cardiac catheterization pictures (angiocardiograms) you will see a collection of coils that were placed in the artery going to the lung to prevent overflowing the lungs with blood.

You will also notice that the artery returning from the lung goes to the right side of the heart.

Courtney is a very brave girl. She is doing very well after her procedure.
